Someone was looking for the book with the call number PL794.K613 and could not locate it upstairs. No one answered the Stacks Phone, what should I do?

I checked the call number and according to the catalog there should have been a copy upstairs. If you can't reach someone in Stacks the next thing you should do is use the "Request Item" feature. What will happen is someone will search for the book for that patron. When they find it they will send them an email that is is here and ready for pick-up on the Lower Level hold shelf.
Always check the record when someone says the book is upstairs. Sometimes the book is actually in a different location like Reference, Reserves, etc.

If a patron can't find a book in the stacks what do I do?

I first check to make sure that the book that should have been there is not out, at another library, or in Reserve. If it should be there and it is not try calling Stack Management at 5-3796. If they have someone they will accompany the patron in to the stacks and see if they can find the book. If they are not able to help at the moment or don't find the book, put a request on the book for the patron. This way staff will continue to look for it for the patron.

If a book is supposed to be here and it is not on Reserve, nor is it where it says it should be what do you do? Where do you send them? -Jackie

You actually would help them request that item (same as a 4-college book) that way someone will search for the book for them and notify them if they find it. You may want to let the patron know that they may not find the book but they will try. Unfortunately some books just go missing.

What is the procedure for a patron looking for a book that is not in its proper location? -D.J.

First you want to check the item again in the card catalog. Make sure the item is not actually in Reserves on the Lower Level (this often happens.) Also make sure that it is not actually at a different school's library, AC or Amherst College for example. If that is the case they can try requesting the item to come here. If it should be here but it is not try calling the Stack Management people at 5-3796. If they have the staff they will help the patron look for the book. If no one answers or they can't locate the book then help the patron request the item they are looking for. This will create a search for the book and someone will try and locate the book for them. If they find the book it will be put on the holdshelf  on the Lower Level. The person will be notified via email it is here and ready for pick-up.
