The Art of Conflict Transormation Events Series

"The Art of Conflict Transformation Events Series brings to UMass artists, academics, and conflict resolvers to explore the transition to peace in Northern Ireland/the north of Ireland. Since 2008, UMass Amherst in conjunction with partners in Belfast and Springfield, Massachusetts has sponsored a variety of activities both in the U.S. and online."

Writing the Landscape

'Writing the Landscape' exhibit
opens Feb. 1 at Du Bois Library

The exhibit "Writing the Landscape: Books from the Library of American Landscape History," featuring several books from the Library of American Landscape History and works by landscape photographer Carol Betsch, opens Feb. 1 at the Learning Commons in the Du Bois Library.

The Library of American Landscape History is a nonprofit organization based in Amherst whose mission is to educate and promote thoughtful stewardship of the land. The award-winning LALH publishing program includes books, surveys, and reprints of classics in the field, such as the "Book of Landscape Gardening" by Frank Waugh, founder of the Landscape Architecture Program. Betsch is the managing editor of University of Massachusetts Press, with whom LALH maintains its primary publishing partnership.

A reception is being held Thursday, Feb. 4 from 4-6 pm

Exhibit "The Making of a Picture Book: The Marriage of Text and Art

Description: "The UMass Amherst Libraries is hosting an exhibit "The Making of a Picture Book: The Marriage of Text and Art" on the Lower Level of Du Bois Library through December 18, 2009. The exhibit features a behind-the-scenes look at the making of picture books by local authors and illustrators Leonard Baskin, Kathryn Brown, Corinne Demas, Patricia MacLachlan, Richard Michelson, Dennis Nolan, Katy Schneider, and Jane Yolen."

Location: Exhibit cases located between the stairwells on the Lower Level.

EXHIBIT: “LEGACY: W.E.B. DU BOIS AS POLITICAL PIONEER”

To commemorate the recent election of America's first African-American president, the UMass Amherst Libraries honors the enduring legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois with an exhibit "Legacy: W.E.B. Du Bois As A Political Pioneer" through November 27 in Special Collections and University Archives, (SCUA) Floor 25. Drawing from the vast Du Bois collection held in SCUA, the exhibit features contributions Du Bois made in the realms of equality and social justice, both in the U.S. and around the world

Where is the gallery in the Library?

We do not have a gallery in the Library but we do have exhibit space. The exhibit space is on the Lower Level between the two large staircases. There may be more on display in the Special Collections room on the 25th floor.

The exhibit features letters, awards, and artifacts from Government Documents in Du Bois Library depicting the history of the UMass Amherst’s development as a federal depository.

“WATER IS LIFE” Exhibit

There is a new exhibit space downstairs in the Learning Commons. It is located down the right set of stairs (if you are sitting behind the desk) down along the wall by Periodicals and the ILL office. In those alcoves they are set up for exhibits of hanging art. The current exhibit is of photographs by Engineers Without Borders the UMass Amherst student chapter.
The opening reception and slide show is tonight, February 6th from 3 pm - 4:30 pm. This will be taking place in the all staff area.

Reminder about Hubert Rogers and ASTOUNDING Magazine: Science Fiction Art from The Golden Age (1930s-1940s) Exhibit

This exhibit is located on the Main floor in the exhibit cases between the two sets of stairs. Another part of the exhibit is located on the 25th Floor. This part is only accessible when the Special Collections and Archives is open 10am-4pm, Monday through Friday.

Where is the Labor and Trade Union exhibit going on in the Library?

It was a test to find this one. Finally after talking to a co-worker she did point out an online Image Gallery for the John W. Bennett Labor Collection. It is a collection including convention badges, buttons, ephemera, watch fobs, and other memorabilia relating to the American labor movement. How to get there? From the Library home page click on "Special Collections and University Archives" . From that site click on "Exhibits and Events", then search  "Exhibits On Line". On this page you will find the "Bennett Labor Collection". Check this page out! There are some interesting galleries including some old pictures of campus. They can also go to the 25th Floor and view these items in person. There is more to the collection then what is shown online.

Where are the photo exhibits on the Main Floor? When are the photo exhibits open to the public for observation?

The photo exhibit is located in the exhibit cases in the area between the two stair cases. The exhibit is able to viewed any time the building is open.

There may also be additional  items displayed in the special collections reading room on the 25th floor open 9:30-5:00.

Where is the Black History exhibit and how do I find where an exhibit might be in the Library?

The current exhibits are "“The Black Rural South, 1966"” which is on the Main Floor, "“In Memoriam: Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott KingÂ" which is on the 2nd Floor in the Quiet Study Room, and "“Black History in Government Documents"” which is on the 6th Floor. For further information on the exhibits click on this link.

The best place to check on exhibits is the Library Home Page. Listed right in the middle is the News section. There they always have new about events taking place in the Library and exhibits.

Do you know where the exhibit "Campus at Night" is located?

I searched the UMass website and also the Five Colleges website and I could not find anything about an exhibit with this title or anything even close.
