Reserve Materials

As a refresher as we are getting a lot of freshman.  We do not carry every book that is required by courses.  We do not have them either in our general collection or on Reserve.  I see many confused students who assume that we do.  Things on Reserve are only there if the professor requests that they be there, the library just processes the request.  These can be items where the library already owns a copy, or they can be the professor's or department's copy.  Items that are technically not the Libraries will not show up in the our general collection (non Reserve search) as they are not ours. 

If a professor put a recording of his lectures in the library, where would it be?

That would be on physical Reserves located at the Circ/Reserves Desk.  The Reserves located at the Circ/Reserves Desk has books, videos, recordings, photocopies, course packets, etc.

****New Changes****

All physical Reserves go out for a 3 hour loan period.  ALL!

All Reserves are now 3 hour loans.

Starting on June 10th, 2011 all Reserves will be 3 hour loans.  Most Reserves are allowed out of the building, there are a few exceptions.  Also you may renew as long as no one else is waiting.  All renews must be done at the Circ/Reserves Desk in the LL.

The only change to report is Reserve books can now leave the building.

F.Y.I.

Because of the recent fire alarm there is now information for what students who check out laptops from Floor 3 should do in an emergency. They should take them with them when they leave the building for the emergency. They need to get the laptop back in 4 hours of when the library re-opens. If they can't get it back to Floor 3 in that time they should call Reserves to give them a reason why it can't be back and the time to expect it back. Any late fees due to am emergency evacuations will be waived.

Anyone who takes a laptop out will be given these instructions.

It is important during any fire alarm that you get yourself out of the building as quickly as possible. I am just giving you this information just in case you ever get asked. Please never stay at the desk during an emergency to answer questions.

Do items from Reserves need to be returned there or can they be dropped off in the Return boxes?

Anything taken from Reserves needs to be returned to the LC Desk downstairs. The reason is many of the items are only out for a short period of time so if a person returns the item in the book drop in the Lobby it may not get back downstairs before the item is due. In that case the student will get a bill for the time it is late.

Where do you put books on Reserve?

If any instructor or faculty comes in to the Library wanting to put something on Reserve or E-Reserve send them to the LC Desk on the Lower Level.

Do books taken out from Reserves need to be returned at the Reserves Desk?

Yes they do. Anything taken out at the LC Desk that is on Reserves should be returned there. Never put reserves items in the book drop.

Had trouble finding a course book for French 230/240? Note: Searched "Basic Search of UM Reserves."

I would make sure that you are selecting the right option on the left after using the "Search Course Reserves" option from the library home page or while using the "Reserves" tab. If you are doing this and still can't find it send them to the LC Desk on the LL. Depending on the time of year it may be so busy that the book is not on Reserves yet. It is also possible that the teacher did not put it on Reserves. Any time you have a question about Reserves just send them to the LC Desk, they will be able to help them better.

How can I find if textbooks are in the Library if the patron only has the class # and name? Would the Circ/Reserves be able to help them?

Without the names of the books you can't search our general catalog so there is no way of knowing if we have the books in our general collection. On the library web site you can search Reserves by class number or professors name. If you don't find it you can send them to the LC desk for extra help. 

How can you help a student who wants to know where the book is located in the Reserve Department?

Start at the Library home page and click on the tab that reads "view your course reserves" located on the left of the page. From the next page click on the "Search For Course Reserves" option in  red. From there you can search by Instructor, Course Number, Course Name, Department, Title begins with, Author or Call number. The student will need to know the answer to one of these questions to locate the item.
There are also PC's downstairs for the students to search Reserves for themselves.

Where does a professor go to place textbooks on Reserve?

They need to go to the LC Desk on the Lower Level.

Where do you send someone who is looking for a text book for class, but it was not reserved by the teacher?

The Library does not normally purchase textbooks for a number of reasons. They are costly, change often, and would maybe even be stolen. So we don't normally have textbooks in our general collection. We have textbooks on Reserve but that is because the teacher usually puts a copy of their own there. But not every teacher puts items on Reserve for their class.

If someone has a title of a book you can look it up in our catalog and see if we may have a copy of the book they need. If not then they will need to purchase the book for the class.

Where are course books located?

Basically anything class related or that is put here by a teacher is on the Reserve located at the LC Desk on the Lower Level. This could include a movie, old exams, class notes, textbooks, other books, course packets etc... Anything for a class that they are supposed to physically come in here for should be on there.
