The only place that we have newspapers and magazines is on the Lower Level. This unbound periodicals can circulate to UMass students for 24 hours. Newspapers however cannot leave the bulding.
If it is a student in a journalism class they will usually need to purchase their own copy. Papers are sold at the UStore and at the Newman Center on campus.

Bound Periodicals Borrowing Information
Someone recently complained that when she asked at different service points about how long Bound Periodicals went out she was told different information. This is a reminder that Bound Periodicals do circulate for 24 hours to ONLY UMass affiliated patrons.
Just a reminder that there is a borrowing chart under the phone at the desk. Don't guess! If you are unsure when someone asks you how long they have with a particular type of material it is your job to check and to find out their status as a patron.

If a patron wants a magazine/journal from years ago, it is likely that it is on Microfilms on the 3rd Floor?
Magazines and Journals can be tricky. However if you search for a journal by title in the catalog it should tell you the location of the item. We have magazines and journals both on Microfilm, in bound volumes up in the stacks by call number, and some are now available electronically. Are patrons allowed to "check-out" newspapers and periodicals?
No patron can take out newspapers. Periodicals can go out to some for a limited time to some. Check the Borrow and Renew list under the phone for more details.

Where do we keep the Economist magazines?
Not all magazines are on the Lower Level. If you look up "The Economist" in the online catalog under the option of "journal title begins with" (use this when looking up journals, magazines, and newspapers) you will find "The Economist". It gives a call number of HG11 E2. So it would be on the 17th Floor. If the current issues of a magazine are on the Lower Level it will say, "UM Current News & Mags - LL" in the card catalog.
Where can one find older Science Journals? I referred them to the Reference and Research Assistance Desk downstairs??
That is exactly what you want to do! The records for journals can be tricky and difficult to read so send them to the LC desk for research help..

If people are looking for scholarly journals for research projects send them to the LC Desk for Reference and Research Assistance. Most likely if they are just beginning a research project they are going to need assistance. If you just send them to randomly look through journals (also known as periodicals) they will probably not find what they need.

If someone is looking to access journal articles the best place to send them is to the LC Desk for help. They could either be up in the stacks (according to call number found in the catalog using the Journal title {NOT article title}) or online. Journals can also be referred to as periodicals.
