Carrels

Here is the LINK to apply for a carrel.  Remember only graduate students and faculty can apply for a carrel.

Where can I study?

I thought I would try to put all of the "Where can I study?" information all in one place.

Quiet Study - 2, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20 (it is enforced by the Info Desk)

General Study Space - Any of the stacks floors (usually quiet but not enforced)

Group Study (Computers) - Glass Study Rooms located in the Learning Commons and SEL (preference given to groups of 3 or more)

Group Study (No Computers) - 22 (East Asian Reference and the Du Bois Center) 9, 6 and 5 have larger tables for single or group study, 3, and various areas on the Lower Level.

Reserved Study Carrels - For graduate and faculty ONLY, must go through Circ/Reserves Desk

Open Study Carrels - 10

Comfy Chairs - Lower Level (around Courtyard), Lobby, 2, 3, 5, and 9.

A patron wanted a room larger then the study carrels with the ethernet jacks in the library - is this possible?

There are larger study rooms (aka carrels) available in the library but they are only available to graduate students and faculty. They will need to speak to someone at the Circulation/Reserves Desk if they are eligible. Although I am unsure of the availability at this time during the semester.There are open study carrels on 10 that are available to all patrons.

I'm not sure that you could find an available Ethernet port anywhere in the building now that we have WiFi.

Could you please tell me again about the carrels - who can use them, where you would go to get the keys, etc...?

Carrels are given out to graduate students (Masters and Doctoral) and faculty only. All of the carrel assignments, paperwork, keys, etc...is done by the LC Desk in the Learning Commons. So anyone who is either a graduate student or faculty can be sent to the LC Desk to fill out an application for a carrel or do it online HERE

Carrel rooms, where do they get a key for it? -Jackie

Carrel rooms are given out to faculty and graduate students ONLY. They get the key and information about them at the LC Desk on the Lower Level. Check out the "Carrel Floor Tour" on the  Blog for more information.

Where do people sign up to get an individual room on the upper floors at the library? What is the procedure they must follow? -Juan

To get a study carrel (these are the individual rooms that get checked out to someone for the academic year) they need to apply at the LC Desk. For more information about carrels and for the application to apply online patrons can go to http://www.library.umass.edu/services/borrowing/library-carrels/ These carrels are for Graduate students and Faculty only.

We also have open study carrels, they are available on the 7th and 10th Floor. These carrels have no doors on them.

For additional study space there is the 2nd and 5th floor quiet study space or all of the stack floors have study tables and chairs around the edge of the floor.

Any open rooms to study in the Library?

There are group study rooms in the Learning Commons. Anyone can use them.. They are meant more for groups of three or more though so if a group comes along that wants the room, a single person can be asked to leave for the bigger group to use the room.

There are also open study carrels (single study) on Floors 7 and 10.

Do you know of any rooms that patrons can go in and study?

If they are a Graduate Student or Faculty they can apply for a carrel online by going to the "Borrowing" option under "Services" on the left hand side of the Library home page. From the next page click on "Library Carrels" which is the bottom option on the left. From there they can read about the carrels and find the application.

On the 7th and 10th Floor there are open carrels with no doors on them that anyone can use.

There are also glass study rooms located in the Learning Commons and in the Science and Engineering Library. Groups of three or more can reserve them online. Ask at the LC Desk for more information.
